21 mar Holy Week in Tarragona, Festival of National Tourist Interest
One of the most solemn manifestations of the celebrations of the city of Tarragona is Easter, whose protagonist is the Holy Burial Procession on Good Friday.
The first recorded celebration of this procession through the streets of the Upper town dates from 1550. Currently, more than 4,000 people tested are grouped in 12 guilds, brotherhoods and congregations that carry 20 mysteries in this procession. The steps are preceded by armats (armed) that break the silence with the sound of their drums.
This procession is considered one of the largest in the Mediterranean and was declared a “Traditional Festival of National Interest” by the Generalitat de Catalunya, in 1999 and reclassified in 2010 as “Patrimonial Element of National Interest”. In 2009 the whole of Holy Week of Tarragona was declared “festival of national interest” by the Generalitat. It takes place from March 29th to April 5th.
