26 Aug Villena returns to its past with the celebration of Moors and Christians Festivities

These festivals, declared of National Tourist Interest, and whose origin goes back to 1474 offer to those who visit them good atmosphere, joy, tradition and a good lesson of history. From 4th to 7th September, the streets of Villena will host thousands of people who will come to enjoy this festival and 14 comparsas that will incarnate Moors, Christians, students, warriors, farmers … One of its main peculiarities is that it continues to include Figure of Mohammed during the representation of the known ones like Embassies.

These festivities, some of the oldest in Spain, are celebrated in honor of the Virgin of Virtues, lawyer against the plague and patroness of the city, proclaimed as such in 1474, and whose image was transferred to a sanctuary located a few kilometers from Villena to which the neighbors come twice a year: one in March and the other on 8th September.
